Malnutrition Labels: Nutritional Ink

An activation to highlight the twin issues of food waste and unhealthy diets.

Posters designed to positively provoke

London, 2022: Bompas & Parr created pioneering posters printed with ink derived from real fruit waste that retained its nutritional value.

The activation – a collaboration with creative agency St Luke's London and one of the capital's leading silkscreen print studios, K2 – saw posters placed next to fast-food trucks and vending machines in an effort to highlight the amount of unhealthy food Brits consume.

‘Malnutrition Labels: Nutritional Ink’ drew attention to the low nutritional value of salty and sweet snacks and drinks, while printing the ads with ink made almost entirely from waste fruit supplied by Dole Sunshine Company. As a result, the posters themselves retained more nutritional benefits than many on-the-go foods.

Partnering with food scientists, the project went through various rounds of experimentation and used a variety of fruit waste and scraps to create optimal colours and nutritional formulations for the printing process.
